Possible Stupid Timing Question

Have a 1996 F150XL with a 300 I6. I went to check the timing on it and I have found the marks on the dampner, but I cannot find an arrow that I am supposed to match the timing light to. It looks like ther are marks on the timing cover that look somewhat similat to the haynes book, but It doesn't really line up to well to check the timing. I only have a timing light with out the advance right now and no matter what I do I can't seem to be able to even see the mark when it spins. It's all hooked up right and everything. The truck runs pretty good so I am sure it is pretty close to being timed. Is there supposed to be another arrow that I am missing? Is a normal timing light just useless and I should invest in a better one? Any help would be much appreciated. There was problems with the distributor long ago (long Story) and the garage told me they timed it. Am I just stupid or is it possible that there is an arrow missing?

Yes I am able to remove the spout. I can hook up the timing light and get it going and everything, but I can't seem to find a reference mark for timing it. Unless it's the mark on the timing chain cover, but then I can't see the mark on the dampner.

clean the damper, hook up timing light with spout out and look around until the lite shows the mark area. shut off engine clean more if needed and use chalk to mark 10 degrees. restart and see if timing is correct.

I have a 93 F-150, w/300 six banger. It has two sets of timing marks. One set (on the timing gear cover I think) is for another application and totally useless! Look carefully for other marks, like a hole.

Good luck,

Okey
