I've got a single bad injector. Found out when a friend did a contribution test with an AE.
Couple of questions.
1) Can I try pulling it and cleaning it? I read a while back of someone soaking the injector in a bucket of Diesel Kleen.
2) If cleaning it doesn't work, am I ok to replace just this injector?
3) I read the Cali injectors were bigger. If I end up replacing all 8, can I simply drop in the Cali injectors without changing the PCM or re-programming it?
4) Can I swap in SD split shot injectors? What is required here?
Pulliing and cleaning one that injector will more than likely help none. You can just replace one injector, but know if one is bad the others aren't far behind. Cali injectors are split shots just like SD injectors, just flow 120cc instead of 140 in the sd trucks. The pcm needs to be programmed to run the split shots. You'd also really be putting your stock hpop to the test with split shots. Probably won't work real well, especially if you work it very hard, without an upgraded hpop.
For chits and giggles if you have a spare cps change it and run the CCT again. My grey ford recall CPS will tell me that #3 is bad
How does the truck run?
Could be UVCH. There is a couple things to check before buying the most expensive injector on the market
Truck seems to run ok. A little rougher on idle than normal, but not like I'm missing an injector. Getting about 15MPG, but my TC is messed up and I have to run w/o OD.
I just replaced the CPS a month ago. The old one (grey) was bad and truck wouldn't start at all. I got ahold of a black one and truck fired right up.
I'll check the UVCH. I just replaced all the GPs two weeks ago. Starts a LOT easier, but still quite a bit of smoke on startup. Could be o-rings too.
If AE says it's #3 or #8, it's probably still the CPS, even if it's new. Although if it's a black CPS it might be fine.
When all said and done, you should swap the 'bad' injector with maybe the one next to it, and re-test.
If it actually is the injector the fault from AE will follow the injector.

Thanks! Next time I get ahold of an AE, I might do this.
The injector in question is #5.
I filled up last night and put some Diesel Kleen in the tank ... about 4X the min. treatment. Truck is running MUCH smoother today. It's not rocking the truck like it was yesterday.
I've been through 3 of the gray CPS in the last 18 months. Seems like they last about 6 months, then crap out.
