I've got a e99 F350 SRW everything stock with about 278000 miles. As far as I know I bout it used with about 75000 on it. The transmission has never been rebuilt. They guy that had it before me had the trans fluid changed at the dealership about every 50000 and I continued this schedule. My question is its time to change it again and I read on here about how everyone runs a synthetic in their transmissions. With that many miles on it would it be okay to switch to a synthetic or stick with the regular Mercon V. I have noticed the shifts taking longer so I know a rebuild is in my future but trying to stretch it out as long as I can. Would just like ya'lls opinion.
My opinion, you've got 1 hellova run outta that trans. I wouldnt change to synthetic. Replace the oil, filter and.. probably the "long shifts" may come back normal.
I know about Mercon V but my question is: I was told that on the clutch plates it states to use regular Mercon ? My truck is an '02. It's actually at the tranny shop as we speak
The only thing that's printed on the clutch plates is the part number.
Your owner's manual states to only use MERCON. It also says that on your dipstick. In 2006 Ford changed MERCON V to be compatible with the 4R100 and issued a TSB that superseded your owner's manual and dipstick. MERCON V is now the right fluid to use.
No, there is no harm in running MERCON. My worry about MERCON is that nobody makes a fluid with a Ford MERCON license.
Until 2006 any fluid that said MERCON had to have a Ford license. To get the license Ford monitored the fluid and actually tested samples on a regular basis. That is still happening with MERCON V, but Ford doesn't license MERCON anymore, so nobody is monitoring the fluid properties. It's probably OK...

Thank you! I appreciate your knowledge! I'm now wondering if I should call my tranny shop back and ask them to switch it? I just picked my truck up!

That is my biggest concern about running a dex/merc fluid but at least this is somewhat re-assuring...
