I am thinking about running amsoil synthetic in my next fast approching transmission fluid change but i have heard you can only run the merc. sp anybody have any insight on this? thanks
As far as we can tell, Amsoil doesn't meet the requirement for SP - even though they are now stating so. Having said that, the SP appears to be a quality fluid and I can't see switching to something that is both questionable and more costly.
Lets please not make this an Amsoil thread - to date, no one else has licensed Mercon SP and thus Motorcraft is our sole source.
i had my buddy at the tranny shop tell me i could run synthetic, but you do have to remove the converter and cut it open to remove all of the old because you dont want them to mix.
Mercon SP is a synthetic fluid... I know that it has very specific shear and viscosity characteristics built in to dealt with the abuse this 5R110 sees. As far as I know 4x4Mark is 100% right and until Ford licences out the specs for the oil to other manufacturers I'm going to stick with Mercon SP.
Mercon SP is synthetic and other companies claims that their fluid is can not be verified, as Ford has not licenced it to others.
As well, the Amsoil stuff claims to be Mercon, Mercon V and Mercon SP rated, but due to the different specs of each fluid, there is NO way it can be!!!!
Stick with Mercon SP from Motorcraft and you will be money ahead... and it is a good fluid at that!!!
