Rough Runnning At Start-Up ?

Our 2006 6.0L diesel has developed a problem of really rough running at start-up and being powerless until it warms up good. After 5-10 minutes the engine smooths out, it then runs perfectly with full power. If anyone here has had that problem and knows the cure, we sure would appreciate your advice. Thanks a bunch, Jim

It is either the FICM (Fuel injection control module) or a sticking injector(injector stiction). You can check the FICM voltage yourself if you have a voltmeter.

Sometimes you can get rid of a sticking injector using a product like REV X or Hot Shot Secret, otherwise you will need to replace it/them to fix it.

Any codes at all?

https://www.ford-trucks.com/forums/8...procedure.html

Run through the FICM test procedure (or use an OBDII gauge set up like this: ScanGauge II ) and figure out what the voltage is doing

Drive it until it breaks, then sell? Nice plan

This worked for me

Check this.

Credit for the first two paragraphs belongs to Josh Boggin (River City Diesel):

The main reason why the 6.0 is so picky about oil is because it is totally reliant on two electromagnets to shuttle the spool and control the oil to the injectors. The 7.3`s use a electromagnet also but a spring to return the poppet to the closed position. Obviously the spring will work much better to "cut" through the thick oil and close the oil flow.

Not only will running oil with too thick of a viscosity cause rough starts. But this also will interrupt the shuttle action of the spool causing injection timing to be retarded causing poor performance and decreased mileage until the oil is up to full operating temperature.

I "stole" it from another site. I thought it was worth sharing.

I also wanted to consolidate some info from another post for all those "future" members using the search function:

Common Symptoms of failing injector(s):

Hard Starting (especially w/ cold engine)
Excessive Smoke (white or bluish white)
Rough Running
Low Power
Stalling
Misfire
Buck / Jerk

Typically when one injector fails, the engine is hard to start and is low on power. If two injectors fail starting will be very hard or the engine will not start at all. If you do manage to start the engine, it will be very low on power.

I did a oil change and switched to a synthetic oil and it stopped my truck would run rough for up to 30 min.
A lot of guys are using the Rev x stuff and have good luck. I ordered some yesterday to add to my synthetic can not hurt at this point.
My thoughts are a sticky injector if i can mask it for awhile and keep truck running good until it starts agian and i save the money i will consider it a win.

Good luck and please post results the oil thing worked for me but who knows.

I'm taking my 03 6.0 in tonight so that they can see how hard mine is to start. It was 50degrees and it took three tried to start it before it would stay running. Even then it has zero power and shifts like it has a shift kit in it.

I'll be interested in seeing what you find out.

They will be also looked at the alt and why I have to lock the hubs to use 4wd. I've dated bipolar women less temperamental then this truck.

Check your FICM to start. If your not confortable pulling the cap off the ficm, grab yourself a scanguage or a edge products unit. You can then monitor the voltage.

Wow, Thanks A Bunch For All The Helpful Replies

Howdy All,
Holy Moly, what a great bunch of Ford Power Stroke guys ya'll are and thanks for all the great replies. Now I'm going to have to sift through a bunch of good info you have given me to get the problem fixed. Hopefully, I can finally get issues fixed with this 6.0. When under warranty, I can't remember the times I had it in to the Ford dealer, reminding me of the old saying I used to hear on the farm in the 60's down in Texas for Fords = Fix Or Repair Daily. Fords have always been good trucks for me until this 6.0. I love the King Ranch crew cab dually, but this engine has been a headache. Since I'm a never give up die-hard, I keep hoping one more fix and it will be good all the time instead of most of the time. Now that warranty time has expired half way through the mileage warranty, it will be all on my nickels.

Thanks again with all your input, hopefully it won't be a bank breaking bunch of nickels. Per your requests, I will post our solution results. You are appreciated with much gratitude. Thanks a bunch...Jim

ficm

I have one also running bad when engine is cold, it has voltage faults for all of the injectors and a fault for a bad ficm, my question is who makes a bulletproof replacement for the original?

if you dont have any gauges get some

Even a SGII is a great unit for cheap will monitor all you need except Fuel Press.

this 6.0L is better to watch with gauges and catch things before 1 thing leads to another

there is 1 or 2 other things that will cause your condition but looks like the Guys Hit the main ones so check them first

Thanks for the kudos! We're not anything special, though. We just take care of people the way we'd like to be taken care of - one truck at a time.

Getsome68 I was wondering what you had found out about your truck in particular the difficulty starting and having to lock in the hubs
