I grabbed this F-350 Custom Trailer Special today for $300. It's super clean except the interior. I got it from the second owner who parked it last year when it stopped running. My buddy thinks it needs new points and it will run. I bought it to replace the doors, front clip and tailgate on my 78 crew. Can't decide if I should get her running and sell it, or grab all the stuff I need for my Crew and scrap the rest. What do you guys think?
What you are looking at,, or perhaps I should say, bought, is a "Super Camper Special" it has a 140" wheelbase, and looks to be in pretty good shape! Beings it is a 78, it does not have points,, more than likely,, the "box" went out,, pull the one off yours for a quick try,,, I would fix it and sell it and use the cash you make to buy another,,, they didn't make many of the F350 SCS 140" wb,,,, I had a lot of calls from the rust belt wanting to buy the bed off my 73 SCS,, heck you might take what you need and sell the bed back east,,, it also has a Dana 70 lurking under the rear,,, NICE FIND!!
I don't have a "box" I have a Cummins. It turns over fine and doesn't clunk or anything. What's a box? Oh and the topper is gonna go on craigslist. $100 too cheap?
And I forgot to say that you got to keep that awesome Topper.
Yes you are correct,, but it does help to identify it,,, more so than just a Trailer or Camper Special,,, and yes,, the topper is awesome,, I used to love the ones I remember seeing in Nebraska and Wyoming as a kid,,, they called em "kidnappers" probly not to PC nowadays,, but they were for the farmers and ranchers,,, had a bed and a sink and storage,,, made for nice sleeping when you are out in the north 40,000 and plan on bein out there for a few days,,, beats sleepin in the bed that was usually full of fence posts, wire and hay and what-not ,,, and I love the clearance lights!!
The fella I bought it from said he heard it (the truck) was worth $5,000 from someone in socal who wanted it. I tried not to laugh and agreed that if I found out it was worth a mint I would reciprocate. That topper must degrade the value a couple hundred bucks! Things stupid looking.
If you take the bug guard and topper off then I think it would sell for a lot more than you bought it for. Check out the ignition control module. I'd say try to get $2500 or more when you get it running.
Super Camper Specials are at least as rare, if not more so, than a Crew Cab. I wouldn't junk out either if there was enough left to rebuild, and that one looks pretty clean.
I don't know what you paid for it, or where you are, but I'd nearly bet you could sell it easily for a profit and buy you another parts rig instead of destroying something so hard to find.
*Edit: Just notice you paid $300 for it. You can get a LOT more than that out of it, especially if you get it running. I'd pay a grand for it like it sits if you were near me.
