Pulled the trigger and WHOOSH!

Late edit: The backstory behind this purchase is a few posts down.

I hear this rather powerful suck sound (not unlike a 6637 under heavy boost) coming from my wallet.
  • T500 HPOP
  • Both HPOP lines
  • FRx
  • O-ring Combo Kit
This list is the result of a poll taken from the fine members here at the FTE Brotherhood. Results from these mods will be posted, complete with AutoEnginuity data.

I know what you mean, between tires, radiator, cooler and lines I have spent over 2K this week.

For those who haven't followed my HPOP adventures, I bought AutoEnginuity software recently. Before I bought the software, I was gleefully enjoying the bulls in my DP-tuned 7.3, but the horses were lame and I wanted to know why. Upon reviewing data and asking questions I discovered two things:
  1. Anytime the engine went over 2800 RPM, the HPOP couldn't keep up with the demand of the injectors. It took me a while to arrive at this number because my elevated boost would defuel the truck at 2850 - 2900 RPM. Installing the red line prevents the overboost and the defueling - but not the HPOP pressure loss at 2800.
  2. The demand for more oil works fine, but the HPOP was too pooped to pop in my 80e tune. The pump gave everything it had, but the pressure would suffer. The PCM and the Tuner both respond to low pressure the same way - they extend the time the injectors are open. This makes perfect sense - if you need to fill a bucket with water from a tap with low pressure, you're going to do two things: Open the valve all the way (100% ICP DC) and you're going to leave the valve open longer until the bucket is full (FIPW). If we feel compelled to do this, the computer is programmed by people and it will behave as we do. A programmer might program the tune to keep the Fuel Injector Pulse Width narrow so the HPOP pressure will rise, but that's trading one problem for another - we won't get all the fuel into our bucket (cylinders during ignition). We could lower the demand (ICP DC), but that's just compensating for something that should be repaired to begin with and it defeats the purpose of the tune - more bulls and horses.

Tugly, keep up the great work. I follow most of your posts, understanding it all is another thing.
Can you put together a "notebook"? Something to collect everything in one place? There is so much info, especially when cleatis chimes in.

My plan involves a big write-up close to the beginning of May, clarifying the details. This would take some time though - as my job entails many hours there, plus the two hours on the road per day. Thank you for the supportive words!

But think of all the support you will get while you install it here! You will be set, locked and loaded come April 28th!

The climb over the pass with the T-500 will make you smile! When I swapped mine out, I drove to the top of Stevens Pass and turned around to come back down.........Smiling all the way.

I have to say the T500 is my favorite mod thus far. It's a real SOTP feel coming from a 15* pump.
Full throttle from 50mph used to be just noise and smoke, but now it puts you back in the seat and pulls like never before. It makes pulling the 5'r a bit more enjoyable for sure. Now if I can just get one more year out of my injectors.....

Tugly, you spent your money wisely

You'll get it, Frank... got 330K on mine. I know they're worn because I'm still getting oil in my fuel after injector O-rings. But I've still got great RV #'s and CCT is all systems go. A little more white smoke on startup than necessary, but it'll still haul it's own butt across the country and back. Better than my buddy's '97. He's got sticks so bad that he goes through oil like the motor is shot, CCT fails on #2, idles like crap, white smoke when it's 70*'s, and is pretty much a dog. He's waiting on the $$$ for sticks.
