I have a 1977 Ford F250 Ranger XLT 2wd. It has a 400 C.I.D. V8 engine 2bbl carb. I am looking into possibly dropping in a smaller size engine and am wondering if anyone can give me some suggestions into what will work. I don't really haul much with it and I am planning to restore it and be able to drive it around daily.
I know this is not what you want to hear but if you are wanting a smaller engine to get better mileage, it is not economical. Our trucks and engines were not designed for economy.
That said, you could install a 300six but the gain in MPG divided by the cost of conversion and the amount of labor the install. I don't think you will be happy with the end result. Maybe if everything goes right a gain 5 or 6 MPG, depending oh how bad your 400 is.
If it was mine, I would do a performance build on the 400. Change out the retarded timing gear set along with a better cam topped with a 4 bbl, a good manifold and a set of headers.
This is a great engine that responds well to some tweaking and you will pick up a couple of MPG if you can keep your foot out of it.
Yea your right its not what I wanted to hear. The thing is the guy I bought the truck from didn't take care of it and the engine is about done. A mechanic buddy of advised me to buy a rebuilt engine with warranty over rebuilding it or having someone rebuild it. I have found some 400 cid with warranty for about 1200 to 1600k.
