Any incite would be a big help.
ive got to try and keep the cost low im on the budge of a 17 year old and my parents still beleive in me paying for my rig and fuel and such.

go with these three 4-barrel carb, intake manifold, and cam. i recently bought edelbrock carb and manifold, i didn't get the cam but i should have, if you can keep your foot out of the 4-barrel it will actually get better mpg than your stock 2-barrel, don't go too big on the carb all you need is 600 cfm, if you have extra money left i'd put a set of headers on it.
enjoy, there's a lot of people that dog the 400, but mine will spin my 33x12.50 everytime in forward or reverse

The cam is the best possible upgrade that you can make. Crane Cams makes a awesome setup, includes everything that you will need, getting a 1971 400 timing chain also helps. I don't care what year your motor is, get the 1971 timing chain and gear set. I think I have just effectively spent $500, that should keep you busy for a while.

Stick around and you will soon be a 351M/400 expert like Bubba.

Verify 400 balancer

Considering these engines haven't been built in over 20 years it's not easy to find an engine that has never been rebuilt. So far all the 400 balancers I've seen use a thick H balancer. Could you take a look at yours and let me know if it's less than 1" or more than 1" in thickness?

What's your budget look like?

Hey man I am in the exact same boat (except mine is an f-150 4x4 with a 351). My dad was a mechanic a while back and he helped me determine what needed to be replaced or fixed. I realized that just replacing the block is the most cost effective solution. The "big three" parts are a big drain on the bank account too. It's hard for a teen these days to make much dinero. Oh well, that's my little random spiel at these late hours.
