Well perhaps new isn’t the best word, because it has happened before. The issue is, the power steering is not working, and the fluid is blasting out of the vent hole on the cap when I shut the motor off. I replaced the pump and it fixed the problem for a few months, now it is back. So here are my mods.
I have:
A Saginaw Pump
A gear box I rebuilt myself
Hydro Assist
My sector shaft is marred up, so it leaks a little fluid out of the bottom of the gear box. Even with new seals it still leaks. When I find a good sector I will change this part out, it’s a terrible leak, I just don’t like leaks.
Could it be that maybe it leaked out enough fluid that the hydraulic ram got air in it, and that is being particularly stubborn in bleeding again? I have jacked the front end off the ground and cut the tires left and right trying to slowly bleed it out. But it doesn’t seem to be working.
Every once and a while it will work for a few seconds. But that’s all.
Did the steering box rebuild kit come with 2 bottom seals ? Most kits only have one and a spacer to move the seal to a new location on the shaft so in theory it wont leak, which never works, always leaks then ends up blowing out. I always buy a bottom seal kit to go with the rebuild kit so I can put two seals back in the way it belongs. After you get the leak stopped, I'd first try plugging off the steering lines to the ram and see if it then works ok. If it does then I'd make up a bleeding system like I did and work the ram back & forth till all the air is out of it. I too tryed everything till I went this route. There is just no other way to get all the air out of it. you are just chasing your tail around trying to bleed a ram on the truck.
My Kit came with two bottom seals, the shaft is just too marred up to seal properly. I have thought about sleeving the shaft, but I haven't gone that route yet.
Can you detail how you bled your cylinder? I have had mine bled before, but It is giving me trouble now.
I made up the reservoir with a piece of 3/16" plate and welded a piece of well casing to it then ended up brazing piece of a coffee can on to it to get the resivour a little higher ( it wasn't quite high enough ). Drilled and tapped 2 holes for pipe fitting adapters so I could use the hydraulic lines. After cycling it back and forth till there were no more bubbles I capped the hose ends and put them right onto the box fittings and never had a problem again.
I might have a decent shaft around here if you need one.
