power steering

my 93 f150 was leaking fluid at bottom of steering box sector shaft. I have been keeping fluid in there however it has gotten low once or twice while waiting for an opportunity to fix it. Now I have no power assist at all. I now have the seal kit for sector shaft but am I too late. Have I ruined the pump or steering box. Have been doing my best to keep it full been using atf tranny fluid. Is the seal kit going to help or am I screwed.

sake the pressurized hose off of the pump and see if it shoots out when you crank it if it does then it is your box. probably the pump.

After reading everything I could find in this forum on steering gear leaks I set out to change the sector shaft seal. It was as ugly as everything I read getting the pitman arm off, but with enough beating and heating off it came. The only other problem was the twisted metal pressure and return lines out of gear. Nothing a bell and flaring tool couldnt fix. Anyhow back together last night no leaks and the pump is ok. Thanks to all with same problem and those who had the cure.
