71 250 2WD power steering I believe has the Ford box. It is now leaking after other circumstances with the pump and lines. Anyway NAPA has a rebuild kit for around $40 I didn't know if this is a waste and just buy a new box for $250 or the kit is an easy fix. I have never done this job before , Do you have a way to clean the box out or just put the new seals and O-rings in and call it good?
My pump went gave out(leaked bad, squealed) one day so I replaced it. Few days later the box starting pukin it's guts. Coincidence? Maybe the new pump over pressured what the old seals could hold?
You might get away with new seals, but likely the shafts are worn and grooved thus might last a short time with new seal. Usually better to replace box, which is what I did.
I disagree, A seal kit for the bottom and top of the gear should stop any leaking. Advance Auto had a seal kit for around ten bucks. There is a double seal in the bottom of the gear and usually is the trouble maker.
I have stopped several leaking gears with seals.
FT, I suspect that you may have gotten too much fluid in the pump, and it was seaking it's suitable operating level, or there was air in it that had to be worked out.
I don't think adding seals to the gear would cause the pump to start puking fluid if all other factors were operating correctly. IMHO
The seal kits are also available from Ford. There are two kits, sector shaft kit & input shaft kit. The following are the latest FoMoCo updated part numbers.
The kits fit all full sized Ford LTD/Crwn Vic's, Lincoln Town Cars & Mercury Grand Marquis from 1965 thru 1993 and F100/350's from early 1969 to 1996.
John, it basically blew the bottom seal(sector shaft) out coming to work a few days after putting new pump on. Didn't overfill it, was quiet and doing it's thing. Got to work and it promptly was emptying itself all over the parking lot.
I'm just making note that a seal might fix it, but you might find that the shaft is hurt and putting a new seal might not fix it for long(or at all.)
