I just went threw this try not to pull ur hair out .....I had the same problem I was going nuts .....u need to have the truck scanned and have a Koeo self test performed.....that's needs to happen first before anything is done ......this test will throw codes related to the problem . Basically the code will relate to the problem part with in the system .....the system includes the IDM, wiring to the under valve cover harness connector ,then threw the connector to the each injector .....so every code that is trown is related to a specific piece with in the system ?...post the codes so we can help you this is gonna be a brain tickler don't give up no matter what.
Key on engine off ..... Self test the test can only be done by a higher end scanner that surports enhanced obd 2 functions such as a snap on soulus or modis finding someone in ur area that has on will be the hardest part of diagnoseing the problem. U might be able to find some one on FTE that has one in ur area I have one but I'm in Florida
is this type of scanning something a dealer can do? I cant find anyone that has the nice of a scanner. I have aaa so towing is free wherever i take it. Maybe if tgey scan it i can tow it back home and repair myself?
I too struggled with a P1316 IDM codes stored. I fought it for three or four years. The truck ran fine but the check engine light was always on. Last year California started requiring smog tests and now I had to get rid of the CEL. Took it to an independant shop that had a lot of experience with Fords plus they had the Ford scanning tool. They found the wiring harness under the hood was frayed through in a couple of places. replaced that and now all is well.
Well i havent had much time to work on truck but i replaced the cam position sensor for sh%$s and giggles and fully charged the batteries....nothing changed though. Cranks very strong tach moves and smoke comes from tailpipe. Tomorrow after work im towing it to dealership to have them diagnose it. I'll post what they tell me. Thanks everyone for the help though.
Well I broke down and had AAA tow it to a local reputable Diesel shop (R & R Engine in Akron, OH) and It ended up being my IDM. They showed me my old IDM and it had a pile of salt and corrosion on it about 4 inches in diameter. The tech used a pocket knife to move it and sure enough there were tiny holes eaten through all over it. $500 out of my pocket but well worth it to me. Its been so long since I drove it that I forgot al the other things wrong with it! My caliper and hose need changed badly and its leaking tranny fluid like crazy. I thought it was 2 bolts on the pan that need tapped out but after looking at it last night it seems to be running down the filler tube possibly. All I know for sure is that I'll be posting more threads on here for months to come until I get this machine in top running condition. Once again I appreciate all the help on here from everyone!
Glad you got it figured out, IDM's are IMO rare to fail, but moisture and corrosion will destroy things, since you are considering doing your own maintenance consider this...I realize it is more than the $500 that you had to spend but with the group on this site, we could have led you in the directions needed with good information.
