Use one knee on the bottom of the wheel and one hand on the top pulling towards yourself and give it a good smack with good size hammer. Make sure you keep the nut on a few threads so when it comes loose it doesn't hit you in the head.. On a second note I would recommend using a puller because it is safer and Will cause less damage to the steering column. Good luck.
Wheel puller,a good one will last a long time. I hate it when i get a hold of something somebody has beat the crap out of. Got one once somebody had beat on it like you are. Then after getting it off they ran the nut on and cross threaded it ,then left it that way until i got it. Ruined the shaft. But good luck.
A little steering wheel puller kit is right around $10 if that, and a lot of them include different bolts for one-size-fits-most. They're good to invest in! You never know if you'll have to pull that wheel off again to fix something else.
Proper tool for the job. Buy it once and forget it. Kind of like a power steering pully remover, you save the price by not screwing stuff up. Everyone needs more tools.
My local parts store (O'Reilly's) had a free loaner. They require a $35 deposit, but as long as you bring the puller back within 3 days, you get the deposit back.
