Sliding Rear Window
Both sliders have drain holes in the channel on the bottom. If these plug up, then it will alow water to pool into the bottom channel and leak into the cab. Neither slider is totally water tight, just like the up/down door windows. The 1982-1997 version is better for water control, but looks out of place on a 1980-1981, in my opinion, etc...
By the way, I got rid of my slider due to people trying to break into my truck.
first off, i agree with both sides of the solid versus slider argument. Solids look very clean, and are more secure. Sliders allow the fresh air to roam. My 95, with custom paint, etc, has a solid window. all of my old farm trucks, daily drivers, etc, have all had sliders. I live in a small iowa town, the doors are always unlocked and the keys are always in them, so theft isnt an issue here.
im buying an 81 F150 that has a solid rear glass. this truck will be my daily driving work truck, so nothing special there.i have a rear slider i pulled from my 87 before i scrapped it (bad frame) its not a factory Ford, but also has no aftermarket labeling either. the frames are bare aluminum, it never leaked on me for the 5 years i had it. the rubber seal was singed and a little melted, as the truck sat 5 feet away from the garage as the garage burnt down. still never leaked. However, i'd like to use a new seal, if possible, and it doesnt look like any other slider ive seen. if i get pics, will someone possibly be able to identify it so i can get a seal?
or should i just go yard hopping for a new slider, from a 92- up?
Obviously, with it being December as of tomorrow, this isnt a high priority, but i like having my ducks in a row
There are different seals between the 1973-1981 sliders, 1982-1996/7 sliders, between fixed window and sliders, between fixed windows for 1973-1979, 1980-1996/7, different seals for moulding or without.
There are at least six different seals between the years 1973-1996/7. All the windows are interchangeable between these years, if you use the right seal with the window you get.
I have a fixed window from a 1973-1979 in my 1981 for example, using the 1977-1979 seal with bright flexible trim. The 1973-1979 window is thicker than the 1980-1996/7 counterparts, and the seal is different to compensate the extra thickness.
Aftermarket suppliers like to lump all the years together, and some ill fitting windows have resulted because of window/seal mismatch. It didn't help that in 1980, Ford superceeded all the 1973-1979 windows and seals with the newer thinner 1980-1996/7 types.
Something to be aware of if swapping rear windows around. I have all the details of this somewhere in another thread somewhere, with corresponding part numbers...

1973-1981 (some 1982 possibly due to dealer kits) have the aluminum sliders, with brushed aluminum frame. Seal (slider only for 1980-1981, slider and fixed glass for 1973-1979): D3TZ-1042084-A
1982+ has the black frame, double width channel. Seal/ slider only: D2TZ-1042084-A
1980-1996/1997 rear window seal without insert/ fixed glass only: E0TZ-1042084-A
1980-1996/1997 rear window seal with inserts / fixed glass only: E0TZ-1042084-B
===================
The rear window of the 1973-1979 has thicker glass than the 1980-1996/1997 counterparts so they have different seals to match the glass thickness. as example:
1973-1979 rear window/ without insert / fixed glass or slider / D3TZ-1042084-A
1973-1976 with wide chrome inserts / Fixed Glass only / D3TZ-1042084-C
1977-1979 with narrow inserts / fixed glass only / D7TZ-1042084-A
=============================
What makes it more confusing is Ford discontinued all the seals and glass for the rear windows for the 1973-1979 and used the 1980-1996/1997 rear window glass as service part replacements.
So if you ever changed the rear window or seal out of your truck and found the rear seal doesn't fit exactly right, this is why.
