272 ecy engine code info
I am taking apart my 1955 F100 and the engine has a tag on side with ecy code. I can't find much info and assume the engine was replaced at some point in the past. From what I can find it is a 272? Does anyone know what models this came in and best way to rebuild it to get good power?

Welcome aboard!
The best way to identify your engine is to look at the left side of the actual block for the block "code"
The following link will have all the possible codes.

I think the 55 trucks actually came with a 239 (OHV Y-block) V-8.
My 55 F-600 had a 239 that someone put in it several years back. I currently have a rebuild 60 model 292 for it now.
If it actually IS a 272, you can rebuild it and bore it out. Again the site above will indicate what you can do with it to include a little "stroking"
The 272 is a great engine! If it's a 239, there's not a lot you can do to "speed-tune" it. Most people put 239's in their 55's because they want to have a completely original engine in it. They're not a power-house" though.
Get yourself a Photobucket or other photo-hosting account that can host your pictures. Then you can post them here for everyone to see. We all LOVE pictures!

I've checked that site but there is no ECY code on that page. Side of engine has ECY on it. Thanks
I think a lot of parts have ECY on them though. Manifolds, etc.....

Neither one appears to indicate an "ECY" block......unless I just cannot see it.....
Either someone "stamped" it wrong or he's looking at something else.....(not a Y-block)

Should be three letters then number I.e ( ECG) 60150 which are cast into block upside down below heads at opposite end to clutch flywheel end of engine.
Hope this helps did for me

Yeah. I saw those too. That is maddening! The usual y-block lists seem to have omitted ECY. I wonder why?
If it's an HD version of 56 272, that might explain it but according to Mummert and other Y-guys, there was no difference between the blocks for cars & trucks.
I'll ask him. I am sure this question has been asked many times between 1956 and now!!
In any case, all the Y-rules apply. you can pretty much rebuild a 272 as a 292. If you want to know all the details, you might go over to http://www.y-blocksforever.com/forums/default.aspx
Those people have done everything to a Y-block that can be done, including MPI-EFI and (turbo and belt-driven) supercharging.

Rick
