Original engine or not ?? HELP.
F10 = F100 1/2 ton; V = 239 cid, 8 cyl; 5 = year '55; P = assembly plant St Paul MN; remaining digits are consecutive unit number.
Looks like it could be the original!
Although I am still questioning that this 239 is the one that was installed at time of production. Those casting numbers are all I can seem to find fo ID. Unlike now days where numbers match, unless eng. swap. Thanks again for help.
I doubt there is an ABSOLUTELY guaranteed way to be sure you have the original engine in it. From the codes, you can find out the engine type and maybe when and where it was made but even that won't make you ABSOLUTELY sure it is the original engine.
The ECZ code tells you what type of engine you have. Unfortunately, I can't help you there as I have a 1956 F-250 and the ECZ code isn't listed in my shop manual because the 239 wasn't available that year. To give you some ideas of how the codes work, in 56 my shop manual indicates that the available engine types were:
EBR-S-T 223 CID 6 CYL 1V 8.0:1 CR
ECY-W 272 CID 8 CYL 2V 8.0:1 CR
ECR 272 CID 8 CYL 2V 7.6:1 CR
ECR 272 CID 8 CYL 4V 7.6:1 CR
ECS 302 CID 8 CYL 2V 7.6:1 CR
ECS 302 CID 8 CYL 4V 7.6:1 CR
ECT 332 CID 8 CYL 2V 7.6:1 CR
ECT 332 CID 8 CYL 4V 7.6:1 CR
Your best bet would be to get yourself a 1955 shop manual on CD from the FTE site's on-line store. It has tons of data on the truck including all the engine type codes and other specs. Best money you'll ever spend if you plan on working on the truck at all.
I believe the 6015C part of the code indicates the date and location of engine manufacture but I would be a lot more comfortable if somebody could confirm that. Kenny, anybody else, do you have more info on the production codes for this engine?
George
Thanks for the info. I have a shop manual from FTE but dont find much in the way of numbers that will tell what I want. So that agrees whith what you think about not knowing for sure. But thats fine this truck will do fine either way, just picky.
THANKS AGAIN Don.
