What size motors did the '56 F600 grain haulers have?

It has a 4 speed with a 2 speed eaton diff in the rear. Was it a 272 or a 292?

Thanks

Hi desertcamel, We can rule out the 292, because it didn't come out until mid-year 1958. I know that the 272 was available in 1956 on the F-100, F-250, and F-350, but I don't know whether or not it was used in the bigger F-600. They may have had a bigger V8, I'm just not sure. Wish I could help you further. If you post your data plate info, I'm sure someone who knows the engine codes for '56 could help you better.

I had a 56 F-600 with 4 speed and 2 speed rear and it had a 272 which I had rebuilt.

GIdday Kenny,

Thanks for the reply. Would you believe this truck has no data plate on it at all which is probably one of the reasons why I'm having trouble getting info on it.

Next to the distributor in big block casting letters are: CEBY6015B and under that the number 5.

On the front of the heads are the letters ATW - maybe is was a Canadian truck made for the Australian market - not really sure.

Thanks

Hi, wish I could have helped more. What we really need here is someone with a '56 shop manual. I don't know if you have the original seat, but you might want to check under it if you do. I found a card attached to the underside of the seat on my '59 wich had all the data info on it. Just something to try.

I've checked several websites with no luck and need assistance decoding my Data plate and VIN.
I would also like to know where I can see an "example" of the original color on the web.

Thanks for any help and please send info to eusmine(No Email Addresses In Posts!)

[updated:LAST EDITED ON 27-May-02 AT 02:35 PM (EST)]Got two answers for two questions.

DesertCamel:

Engine casting code: CEBY6015B
The 1956 shop manual lists:

Engine Prefixes Available in 1956:
EBR-S-T = 223 CID, 6 Cyl, 1B, 8.0:1 CR, 202 ft-lb @ 1600-2600 RPM, 133 HP @ 4000 RPM
ECY-W = 272 CID, 8 Cyl, 2B, 8.0:1 CR, 260 ft-lb @ 2400 RPM, 167 HP @ 4400 RPM
ECR = 272 CID, 8 Cyl, 2B, 7.6:1 CR, 247 ft-lb @ 2000-2800 RPM, 158 HP @ 4000 RPM
ECR = 272 CID, 8 Cyl, 4B, 7.6:1 CR, 259 ft-lb @ 2100-2900 RPM, 168 HP @ 3800 RPM
ECS = 302 CID, 8 Cyl, 2B, 7.6:1 CR, 279 ft-lb @ 2000-2600 RPM, 175 HP @ 3800 RPM
ECS = 302 CID, 8 Cyl, 4B, 7.6:1 CR, 286 ft-lb @ 2100-2700 RPM, 186 HP @ 3800 RPM
ECT = 332 CID, 8 Cyl, 2B, 7.6:1 CR, 306 ft-lb @ 2000-2600 RPM, 190 HP @ 3800 RPM
ECT = 332 CID, 8 Cyl, 4B, 7.6:1 CR, 316 ft-lb @ 2100-2700 RPM, 200 HP @ 3800 RPM

Hmmm, I don't see the EBY casting code in any of the prefix codes.

OK, let's dig a little deeper. CEBY6015B - from the Ford Y-Block web site the EBY is the engine part code for a 1954 256 CID Mercury V8. The 6015 is Ford's number for an engine block - any engine block. Does somebody else have a Canadian or overseas shop manual with more info?

George

denisontexas:

OK, let's see what we've got.

VIN: F1006133367
Data plate: 5000 110 120 3900 3 std 3.92 A 30D 304

VIN Decode:
F10 - F-100 series
O - Should be the engine code. "O" isn't in my magic decoder ring.
6 - Year code, 1956
1 - Assembly plant. "1" isn't in my magic decoder ring either.
33367 - Production unit number

Check to be sure the engine code is really an O and not a D or something. Same for the assembly plant - it should be a letter.

Rating Plate Numbers:
GVW: 5000 lbs
Wheelbase: 110 inches
120 HP @ 3900 RPM
3 speed manual transmission - standard duty
3.92:1 rear end gear ratio
A - Color code = Raven Black
30D304 = Production Code, I'm fairly sure the 30D means it was built on the 30th day of April.
