I just bought a 1989 Ford ranger 4x4 super cab for 500 bucks and was thinkin. Has anyone even put a diesel in a ranger. Man that'd be sweet. Im aiming at a mercedes turbo diesel, does anyone know if it'd fit or all the work it would be. Would any other diesels be easier or better?Cheaper? Any help appreciated.
Hey 4x4x4, I just recently found out that they DID make Ranger diesels in the mid 80's, both normally aspirated, and turbo, all 4 cylinders. I have a thread in the forum called "7.3L Power Stroke Diesel", called "Ranger Turbo Diesel". It is a 2 page thread, with lots of good info from knowledgeable folks, and a few links. Everyone who has posted has had pretty much nothing but good things to say about them. The NA diesel supposedly got over 40mpg, and the turbo in the 30's. Yes, I think that would be sweet. I am seriously thinking about buying one, but funds are TIGHT right now. There is a guy in Tennessee with 2 turbos, in great shape. If I had a few grand burning a hole in my pocket, I'd run out there, buy one, & drive it home. There are a few other threads in the diesel forums also, relating to Ranger diesels. Do a search, it's the easy way.
Bob Ayers, are there many mods to get that Mercedes diesel into a Ranger?? Will it bolt right up to the 5 speed?? To an automatic?? Will it drop into a 4x4?? What's the fuel economy like from a Mercedes engine?? I hear the Ranger turbo was pretty darn good!
One other thing about the Mercedes 300D diesel, the oil pan
sump is in the front of the engine, not in the rear, which is
typically found. THis could cause a clearance problem with the
cross member.....
I have a non-turbo 300D, and I get 36MPG at 75MPH on the interstate. The diesel has NO acceleration, but once it gets
wound up, it runs well....

Bob, as long as you're on the subject, do you how I can get the Mercedes AMG-built 5,439-cc SOHC V-8 (349 hp @ 5,550 rpm, 391 lb-ft @ 3,150 rpm) to slide into my '98 Ranger and bolt up to my 5R55E?

(Just kidding, but I wish I weren't )
Hi Rock,
Why stop with the AMG V-8? Go with the AMG 6.0L twin turbo
V-12, 612HP......HaHa!!!!!!
Hey amp17757 how much is he askin for them? Man i'd love 2 get my hands on one but would have 2 be 4x4. Are they? Super cab or regular cab. Man a 4x4 super cab would be nice with the back part just for storage. Get back 2 me i may be interested, thanks.
4x4x4, unfortunately they are 2WD (regular cab I think???), 5 speed. They are in very good shape. He would like to sell one for around 2 grand. I'll contact him, and make sure it's OK to forward his email address. I'll get back to ya' when he gets back to me.
After a very brief stint, Ford quit making them in the mid 80's for a few reasons........1) they didn't have an acceptable amount of power to deal with typical daily driving as judged by the public...........2) they smell bad (ie, exhaust stink, "oilburners", a old oil furnace running around on four tires, etc etc). 3) the overall public in this country just didn't bite.
Hard to stay alive if the people don't want it I guess.

The na diesel was a mazda 2.2 liter motor. This motor was in the rangers in 83 and 84 only. Only came with a 4 speed. They run for ever and get great fuel milage. They are the best for town or back road usage. All farms should have a couple. They do not go up hills great or like to go faster than around 60 mph. I have a 84 that I drive to work and I plan on driving it for a million kilometers. It has 320k on it and the oil pressure is at the top of the bar when up to speed. Uses less than a liter of oil in 8k. They are great!!!
