I recently had a deal fall through with a 51 F5... Anyways, I'm going to look at a 75 F100 Extended cab with an 8' bed. It's got a 390 and automatic (guessing C6), which guy says runs good. He says it needs a new flex plate, but other than that everything is good. Rust isn't too bad, just a few spots, paint is in pretty good shape. Interior is mint. They're asking $1,000 for it, which I think is a pretty good deal, I'm thinking of offering a little less. What do you guys think? Is this an alright engine/tranny combo? What common problems should I look for when I look at it?
If it runs good and overall in good shape I'd say you're good, especially if you can get it for less. Be suspicious though of the "390". Unless it's the original engine and the fourth character of the VIN is "H" then it's more than likely a 360 (VIN "Y"). As been said many times here, 360's "magically" become 390's on sale day.
The tranny will be a C6. Flex plate isn't too bad of a job. You can get new ones for around $35-$40.
If you do get it, be sure to post some pictures so we can get a look at your new baby.
BTW, welcome to FTE. Lots of good people here.
Thanks guys. I'll keep posted on here with what happens. Going to look at it on Sunday and I'm pretty excited to be honest. I'm relatively sure it's a 390, but will double check that vin. Even if it's the 360, my dad had a 72 F350 with that engine and a 360 would be fine. I will DEFINITELY post pictures (I already have a few, but don't want to jinx myself by posting them lol, plus they're not very clear). Any other stuff I should look out for?
Well, went and looked at the 75 F100 today, and it was a lot rustier than it looked in pictures. That's why we go to look at things I guess haha. Cab corners completely rusted out, and the bed was pretty much trashed. Interior was mint, and it ran good had some brake issue though. I went ahead and passed on that one. However, I also looked at a 78 F250 SuperCab today with a 351/C6 combo and it was a lot more solid than this one. Probably going to make an offer on the F250.
Thanks man. It ran a little rough, but I think it just needs a tune up... No water in oil and no water in oil or anything. But yeah, the people with the 75 were nice at least and man did that 390 sound like a tank haha.
Also, I was wondering if anyone knows what makes this F250 a camper special? Does it have a tranny cooler or anything special like that?
Well, to throw a wrench in everything, I found a 77 F250 with a fresh rebuilt 460 and C6 for cheap. Guy claims it has good body, going to look at it today most likely. Things keep popping up! Still interested in that other F250 SuperCab. We'll see what happens with this 77. Whatever happens, I'll be sure to post pics.
