390, pretty much stock. i've been running it for about 2 years without any major changes (or trouble).
tonight- i swapped the distributor. full disclosure- its my first time stabbing a dizzy in on my own.
it seemed to go pretty well- i was at TDC on compression stroke, noted the position of #1 on the cap, made sure rotor was lined up there after re-installation, etc.
here's where it gets weird.
i moved my vac advance can over from the old distributor.
after hooking everything back up, i started the engine.
it would idle...but any activity on the gas pedal, and it started to stall.
i figured the timing was probably WAY off, so i disconnected the vac advance (hooked to ported vacuum), and hooked up my timing light....
and it suddenly ran fine- i could goose it, without stalling.
and the timing was right where i wanted it.
i hooked the vac advance back up...and it went right back to stalling off idle.
i don't get it- i've been using this advance can for 2 years.
what about the vac advance would make the motor all but die off idle?
Mine did that when I swapped dizzys and cannisters. The problem was that one of the cannisters under vacuum pulled too much on the attaching arm, like 3/8" or more, giving too much advance. Use some lungpower and see how much it pulls, should only be like 1/4" inch. Mine was broken or not adjustable so I got a new one and all is well.
puttster
Look at the arms of the vac adv cans. There should be a number stamped in the arm. Different advance curves for different applications. The look similar at a glance. Also the total advance stop could be bad or screwed up.

There's only one vacuum can in play- i moved it over from the old distributor.
How do I check the total advance stop?
Is there any chance that the breakers plates were different between distributors? meaning- should I have moved the vacuum can AND the breaker plate over from my old setup?
