question bout timing/distributor

k trying to set the timing in my truck. 83 f-250 4.9ltre well she runs but not very well it sounds like its missing or something. anyways heres my question, it says to put to 10 btdc so i did but then when i plug the vacumn line back into the advance into the distributor it automatically changesthe timing it reads well past 10 degrees. i know its suppose to do this but i thought it only worked when you had the tthrottle down. replaced coil wires, cap, rotor, i was thinking of just replacing the distributor but i dunno. you thoughts would be very helpful.

k guys please just give some direction here i just wanna know if when you set the timing my emissions label says to put at 10 btdc so is this where it should read when i set the timing or should it be there when the vacumn advance gets plugged back onto the distributor, also to the best of my knowledge this advance shouldnt do anything till you put your foot down but i maybe wrong, so anyone elses intel would be great.

10 deg BTDC with Vacuum UNPLUGGED! You need a fair amount of Vacuum advance when off idle up to about 2000 rpm. By then the mechanical advance has kicked in and the vacuum has backed off.

10 degrees without vacuum is correct. And the late model Fords used live vacuum on there distributors so when you hook the vacuum back up the timing will jump up quite a little bit, but it shouldn't exceed 32 degrees by much. If it does and it runs rough then the springs in the mechanical advance are shot or gone. And I have seen his happen. They are below the plate in the dizzy the has the pickup coil bolted to it.

ok this totally helps me out it does advance as soon as i plug it back in but does not exceed 32 degrees i think. she still runs rough though like a missfire or something. when shes cold its a bitch to start then when it warms up it starts fine, but when i give her gas she just sounds bad. i took the distributor out and took the distributor apart and cleaned it all and put it back together so i dunno. i know this is a bad description on what she runs like but the help is appreciated. thinking of just replacing the distributor with a new one i can get it for bout 80 bucks canadian so i figure ill try that when money rolls in
