Ok here's the deal I have a 66 f250 with a 86 351 widsor motor. My problem is its started fine fir the last 5 years but in june the starter went out. So I replaced it this morning I go to start it and its hanging up. I shut the truck off and try again its still engaged. So my question is did this starter crap out too?? Thanks guys.
Hanging up internally inside the starter means you need to take it back, hanging up at the flywheel is addressed here.
Hanging up is usually a mounting problem. A little off on one side makes a big difference on the star gear at the flywheel.
Try loosening the starter at the engine about 3/8 inch and make sure nothing is in between the starter and engine like a washer or wire or chunk of greasy dirt.
If not, it is possible you have a warped face on the starter.
I do not remember if that specific engine needs shimming but if it does you can feel the difference or see the difference when you first snug up the starter. The more calm, slow and steady you are, the better you can feel and see a difference in the tightness between one side and another.
Snug up the starter but not real tight and try it out. If it works, tighten it more and test, and so on to see if your causing a binding while tightening. If it binds, take it back for an exchange.... I have never been comfortable with installing a warped starter using shims.
i AM SURE YOU KNOW... .... DISCONNECT THE GROUND AT THE BATTERY WHEN YOU ARE MESSING WITH A STARTER OR STARTER SOLENOID.
I don't remember about shims on the windsors but agree with the post above. It is possible that you did get a bad starter, happens all the time. I've had to take "new" parts back before because the were bad right out of the box. You should watch a video on how the reman places work it is pretty scary. Also, since you'll have the starter out anyway, how do the teeth on the flexplate/flywheel look?

Which starter did you buy? 351W: M/T starter is different than A/T starter.
I always take my OME starter to a place and have them rebuilt instead of buying a cheap china made starter... Getting harder and harder to find, but always worth it..
