Starter began to occasionally not engage about a year ago. It would do it intermittently every once in a while (months) so it wasn't a big deal at first. Put in a new battery, heavy duty 850 cca March 05. Recently starter began to not engage more often, finally last week it did it twice in a row. Solenoid activates, starter turns, but gear misses flywheel and makes grinding noise.
OK, so today replaced starter. Seemed OK for about a half dozen starts, but just a while ago, it did the same thing. Battery seems OK, starter turns engine like a scalded dog once it engages.
Any ideas on what else could cause starter gear not to engage?

Reason: Title change
Replaced starter. Old starter gear teeth showed a lot of wear. Day after replaced starter, missed again once but has been ok for a couple of months now. Probably is chipped teeth on flywheel.
that's a downfall of the auto trans. no way to easily rotate the crank to get some good teeth exposed. to check'm i'd pull the spark plugs and put a ratchet on the crank in nuetral. have a friend watch or turn. but block the wheels.
