Starter or Flywheel?

About 3 weeks ago, with the help of my father-in-law, I replaced the starter on my '89. It worked for a little while then began to give me trouble. It starts. Not always on the first crank, but it eventually starts. At the advice of a mechanic friend I checked the teeth. He said if they're in good shape get a new starter. Could it just be a bad starter even though I just installed it?

Mayeb check and clean all connections and you could try replaceing the starter relay.

did you replace it with one from ford? i've seen lots of junk starters for these from the aftermarket. check the battery wires and starter wire for good conection and any sign of corrosion as well as the batter ground at block.
