Question Clicking/noisy valve

My 1994 7.3 Diesel seems to have trouble with one valve, it makes a distinct click for every engine rotation. Have not found which one yet, but I plan to, and fix it my self. I'm quite sure the noise is NOT "normal Diesel noise."
I have no experience with these engines, so I wonder what procedure I should follow.
Is it possible to do repairs on the valve lifters without removing the heads, or even the entire engine? The engine compartment in the Econoline isn't too roomy...

-Ray.

Clicking/noisy valve

Hi Ray,
Are you sure it is a valve noise and not a nozzle (injector) taking a crap on you? They have springs and seats in them to maintain the pressure to cause pressure to make the fuel spray and I have found in my older truck they sound like a valve noise (tick, tick) but a little harder. Actually may be called slobber. Are you experiencing any other symptoms. Running rough maybe ??

Clicking/noisy valve

bilder12: it's an IDI.

I'm not COMPLETELY sure it's a valve, but I guess so as it does not sound like nozzle clatter. When I fire it up cold, the clicking drowns in the normal "cold engine nozzle clatter", and when engine gets hot, it gets more distinct. It is also most distinct when engine is not idling/under load, I'd guess at about 2000 rpm.
It seems NOT to decrease anything when the engine warms up. rather contrary.
