I was listnening to my 5.4 today and there's a clicking noise coming from the wear of the engine/ transmission area its like a click a second and increases with the speed of the motor. Could it be a lifter? Valve? Improper spark plug gap? Anybody have this noise? Thanks!
Check the exhaust manifold studs to see if the nut is broken off any of them, especially the rear ones. If you find any broken then you're likely hearing an exhaust leak ticking noise.
I read a thread a couple days ago where someone changed their spark plugs and found a spark plug loose. They had a tick that they assumed was a lifter, but after the plug change the tick is gone.
I agree with alloro though, check the exhaust studs, that's a pretty common source for ticking noise.
I like to use a piece of hose (water/fuel/vacuum) as a stethoscope. Move it around to different areas on the engine. You can get down to the spark plug bores and move all around the exhaust manifolds.
