I have a 2000 f-250 super duty... The other day I noticed that it seemed like the 4x4 wasn't engaging although the light was on, the hubs were locked and the front shaft was spinning. I also noticed it is very hard to put in 4 lo and when i get down to 4lo it doesn't stay. Other problems I noticed that may or may not be related are, the heat only works sometimes but that might just be the vents and I may still be coming out of the defrost.
ESOF module and vacuum lines to the wheels need to be checked. There is a vacuum pump under the hood and it pretty much runs two things: The 4X4 hubs and the cab vent diverter. No vacuum? Default to defrost. Where do the vacuum leaks occur? The ESOF module can leak, and the last 2" of vacuum hose to the wheel is common. If you have aftermarket hubs, you need to plug the vacuum lines.
My truck has manual 4x4 (shifter on the floor) I think I'm gonna take it to a lift and see if the axles spin and take it from there. I also found this in the tsb's 04-18-5***AXLE - FRONT HUBS NOT ENGAGING, NOT STAYING ENGAGED AND/OR UNLOCKING Don't know if that could be a problem as I don't know if the 4x4 ever worked. Once again thank you for everyone's help I really appreciate it!
today i got under the truck while my friend drove and i did notice the 2 knuckles by the wheels were turning in 4x4 and so was the front axle. I was even able to get it in 4lo easier. what i did was lock the hubs and bock in reverse a little bit and forward a little bit i still am going to put it on a lift and check the spin to make sure. thanks for all your help!
it seemed like it did, the wheel turned with the axle or so it seemed. In 2 wheel it spun a bit but, that looked like it was due to the rotation of the wheel.
The transfer case can be stubborn sometimes especially getting into 4LO. I am not sure if this is a sign of a problem or just nature of the beast.
If the hub in the transfer case becomes worn along with the shifting fork, it will become very difficult to shift. Cost me a few hundred extra bucks when I had my transmission rebuilt this winter. After replacement of the worn parts, though, it was gliding into gear when shifting into 4 wheel.
It always shifts into 4hi really easy and today getting to 4lo was super easy. I think that going forward and reverse gave the hubs a chance to catch then I put it in 4x4.
