Hi I'm new to the site and have been trying to gather as much info as I can on my problem. I have a 2000 f-250 super duty lifted 4" that I bought about 2 months ago. It has the shifter on the floor and manual hubs. The other day I noticed that it seemed like the 4x4 wasn't engaging although the light was on, the hubs were locked and the front shaft was spinning. I also noticed it is very hard to put in 4 lo and when i get down to 4lo it doesn't stay. Other problems I noticed that may or may not be related are, the heat only works sometimes but that might just be the vents and I may still be coming out of the defrost, the truck overheats if i idle it for a while because I think the fan does work but normal driving it is fine and the over drive light is on and sometimes needs a jiggle to go off but i think that is a chaffed wire that i will look at. Any help or a point in the right direction would be greatly appreciated.
I believe this system is all mechanical. If your front drive shaft is spinning in 4wd and the front tires are not, then its tye hubs. If nothing happens when you put it it 4x4 then I would say something cake loose in Tue transfer case. Or maybe a cable or something.
The hubs can be taken off before your bearing assembly. It is the mostly plastic part that has the lock/ unlock switch. The hub is what connects the drive shaft to your bearing assembly's this powering your wheel. If this part is bad 4x4'en won't happen. If you put the truck in the air and the drive sahft spins but there is no power getting to the wheels then one or both of your hubs are bad. You can take the hub off my pulling the large snap ring first. Then out comes the hub.
Thank you for all your help and sticking with me. I read somewhere "If the truck has lockout hubs, just lock them one at a time in 2WD. With the truck moving forward the axle on the locked hub side should turn. If the driveshaft also turns, the truck probably as an automatic locker in the front diff. Do this test to each side one at a time. If the axle shaft on the locked side doesn't turn, then the hub is bad on that side." , is this true? Also to put the truck into 4lo is near impossible I can get it to neutral just cant get it to stay in 4lo, is it possible that's a sign of something else?
Yes that test is correct. Again, I would lift the front up and look at you axel u joint thru the steering knuckle to see if the axel is turning when performing that test. Probably just be able to spin your wheel by hand and look.
Now on your transfer case, I don't know. Could just be a cable out of adjustment or something more. Hopefully someone else chimes in here for that question.
Great information! My question is about my 2006 F-350 XLT; I have the automatic switch on the dash which would normally engage the 4 wheel drive. My hubs are normally in the "auto" position. When I need the 4 wheel drive and turn the switch to 4x4 high or low, nothing happens. No 4 wheel drive, and the indicater light is on. I have to get out and lock the hubs in then turn the switch to either high or low and everything works just fine. But I have to physically get out, lock and unlock the hubs. Anyone have an idea where I should start looking for the solution to the problem?
