Pulling out a turbo kit

Hi guys,

So I'm going to be pulling a turbo out of a truck (found somebody parting their truck out) to put into my truck (mine's an '84 F250 6.9l 4spd T-19 NA). Guy says the turbo is a Banks.

I've never pulled or installed a turbo kit, so my question is do I need to bring any special tools I might not realize? What do I need to get? I'm thinking I need the turbo (obviously), the downpipe, air filter setup, EGT (if there is one), oil feed lines, valve cover with the oil return insert... what else? What about the dipstick - do I need that too?

Also, I told my buddy I was doing this (he's a PSD guy) and he said that he thought it was risky to turbo this truck since it wasn't designed for a turbo. Seems like there's lots of guys on here that have done this though so... IDK. My truck pulls my trailer which I live in full time so having a reliable working truck is important. I don't want to put in something that is only going to damage my engine... Any thoughts?

Is it non wastegated? Old style banks? I could be wrong but the uppipes or downpipe may have been different for auto/manual trannys. Someone else should know for sure. With the turbo you shouldn't hurt anything if you keep the boost and EGTs in check

I'm not sure but it's probably an old style banks. It's coming out of a truck used for firewood/ work so I doubt it's got a new style banks turbo kit in it. Also, I'm not sure if it's wastegated or not. I'll probably take the up and down pipes just in case unless someone knows for sure if they'll fit or not. Is the down pipe bolted on both ends or is it welded somehow? The up pipe will be bolted on both ends I assume? Sorry for the ignorant questions, thanks for the reply dirtydiesel.

Also, what's "safe" for boost and EGTs? Can the bottom end handle the extra power ok or does a turbo stress it at all?

Safe boost for the 6.9 would be 10 lbs. max the egt 1150 degrees 1200 for short times (under a min.)

for pipes, you want from the manifold to the turbo, then from the turbo to the muffler.
turbo, turbo pedestal that mounts to the head.
oil lines into and out of turbo. oil pressure switch relocation lines and wires, CDR relocation hoses, timing cover adapter, air inlet, air box, turbo to air box hoses, boost gauge, pyrometer probe and wires, pyrometer and gauge.

pretty much anything that remotely touches the turbo or anything that touches anything that touches the turbo.
you can not take too much, but you can very easily not take enough.

also, auto trans pipes will work on a manual trans, but manual trans pipes will not work on auto trans without modification.

thanks tjc transport, sounds like I need even more than I thought. Also, sounds like the pipes will work for me then. I don't remember if the donor truck is a manual or auto but since mine is a manual it sounds like it won't matter anyway. I'm going to write down all the parts you just listed so i don't forget anything thanks for that.

that is off the top of my head.

like i said, if it is connected to anything connected to the turbo, try to take it.
the banks unit uses the CDR mount for the turbo oil drain, and moves the CDR to either the valve cover for the WG unit, or the air box for the non waste gated unit. the CDR draws from the timing cover adapter.
