Turbo

I'm thinking about getting a turbo for my truck. It's a 1993 7.3 IDI. I know the turbo would add more power, but I dont want to risk blowing up the engine. It has 111xxx mi. on it. I've heard stories about old tractors such as our old 4020 getting an M&W turbo and then it blew up. We got it rebuilt and it runs fine now, but I don't want to rebuild the 7.3

If its within your price range, i would go for it. 111k miles is not much for a diesel, and if your conserned about the long term life expectancy, just leave the boost at the preset 7.5 PSI and you will be fine. Even a 6.9 with weaker head bolts can take that kind of boost.

Agreed with David85 there are three aftermarket turbo kits
1. ATS
2. Banks (which just discountinued their line)
3. Hypermax (The cheapest but only by 100 dollars or so)

I know people on here tend to like the ATS turbo kit the best. If i was getting a turbo kit i would go with ats, but that is just my opinion. I hope this helps out some. You could probably ask others on here with the 3 types and get their opinions on each.

All three turbo kits will yield similar results, but the general impression is that the ATS is easier to install. Banks and ATS are wastegated, while the Hypermax is none wastegated.

It is a valve in the turbo that opens to prevent overboosting at higher RPM. A turbo kit that does not have a wastegate in general, is designed to give less boost at lower RPMs than a comparable wastegated turbo, otherwise the turbo can overboost the engine (max boost is usually only seen close to redline). What this usually means, is that a wastegated turbo can help low end torque more than a none wastgated unit, although sometimes at the expence of slightly higher EGTs (exhaust gas temperature, the lower the better, max is 1250F) due to slightly higher back pressure.

Tanx ... And to lower EGT various injector systems in the intake to lower combustion temps? Like water and propane?

Not sure if propane would lower EGTs, but water would make a difference. I hope to run water injection some day, if I ever get the time.

banks has not discontinued the sidewinder just yet. I talked to the sales rep not too long ago and he said they were not sure when they would discontinue it. it was only RUMOR anywho you will still be able to piece together a setup with the tons of parts they still make to replace ones that get broke or what not.

I put on a Banks Sidewinder at 138,xxx. I now have 215,xxx. No problems at all. It was like buying a new truck with a huge boost in both hp and torque. My fuel mpg did not change much empty (17+), however it incresed when towing or hauling (10 to 12+)

I have heard excellent things about all these kits and have actually been considering going with the ats myself but does anyone know what it all comes with and what they use for fuel management.

I havent got my ats figured out quite yet but my experience with my banks sidewinder has been great. 100,000 miles of running 15 lbs of boost with no problems except twice the power it had before. no change in fuel milage. so i would recomend the banks. like i say, however, i havent quite figured out the ats
