I have the old non wastegated banks turbo for my 6.9 and it was put on a long time ago obviously. The turbo is worn out and all the rubber to teh huge cast iron box and etcc is worn out so its time for a new turbo. what do you guys have experience with? I do have knowledge of turbos and what not so its either one of those systems or i am doing my own using a garett t66 but i am just trying to gather input on those 2 systems thanks.
I dont have ALOT of experience with Diesels, but mine has an ATS and so far I like it, everyone tells me I'm lucky, I didnt have to drive it without the turba. Anyway, it seems flawless
i put the banks unit on my 88 less than i year after i got it. almost 17 years and still going strong. the only thing i changed was the inlet hoses, and the exhaust pipes last year..
I got the ATS Factory set-up with the Garrett Turbo. Factory set-up came with a 2 1/4" exhaust which seems to have a huge restriction. Trying to talk myself into spending the $800 to go to the 3" exhaust. Have not quite managed to convince the wife that that is a good idea. Heck she still don't understand what pressure drop is.
With the wastegate connected I max out at 7.0 psig.
I used the wastegate connection for my turbo boost gauge and have pushed things to 10 psig. Don't want to go any further without an aftercooler. Also pyro temp is climbing.
Heard lots of good things about the banks, but give my Garrett Turbo is paid for I can't see myself switching. I am considering a homemade aftercooler much like is used on the volvo diesels in the boats. The benefit is you have water cooling the outlet air from the turbo and typically don't have the pressure drop you would see in an air-to-air cooler like banks is offering. Of course it gets a bit pricey given the second radiator, air-to-water aftercooler and circulation pump required. Makes for a really neat and tight installation though as you don't have those monster 3" air ducts running from the turbo to the aftercooler and back.
stock bank's sidewinder should give approx. 10 psi. it will give you more psi @ lower rpms because it has the waste gate. i have a sidewinder on a 7.3, no problems so far.
