Main Seal question

So my truck has developed an oil leak, and I haven't pulled the inspection plate to confirm it, but I don't see any oil on top rear of the engine, so I am thinking it is the rear main seal or part of the pan gasket.

My question is this... If I do find this to be the issue, should I buy the seal with the wear sleeve? Is there a "tried and proven" seal or any to stay away from?

Thanks, Kyle

I did mine when swapping the tranny since I didn't know the history and everything looked like it was leaking (when I got it apart, not sure if it was or not, but figured it was worth doing).
I didn't remove the rear cover, didn't see any need to. I did have an issue with the cheap *** ford install tool. The 4 plastic dowels don't keep it straight, and it went crooked at one point. I was able to even it out though and I think just used a block of wood over the whole shebang to drive it straight.

Would a dealership have that on the shelf? Does NAPA have an equivalent part number?

The dealership is gonna charge like $100 for a seal that typically costs between $15 and $30.

On the 385k mile motor I swapped into my 94, I used a Victor Reinz Kit (JV547), No sleeve, ~2000 miles and no leak ...

X2 on the wood block, it's much better than the install tool. Get the seal with the sleeve included and use Permatex Ultra-Blue around the flange.
