My 2006 F350 is in the shop for seal replacement for the second time in 6 mos.
My Question is this, is the seal itself internal (around crankshaft) or face mounted External ? I've never had the need to Rebuild a Diesel as yet but I've built a number of gas V8s (all with crank seals internal IE: inside the oil pan around the crank)
TIA For the info
Eric
I can't think that a facing seal would offer anything positive to a rear main, plus most all of the manufactures are tooled to make internal seals, so it should be cheaper to produce and cheaper for Ford to buy in bulk.
This could be a result of tearing the seal from the first replacement, but if you have to do it again, I'd think there was a problem with the flange.
I got the Truck Back yesterday, the Rear Main Seal on the 6.0 PS Is a Surface mount seal on the back of the engine. The Tech said theese seals have been Quite a problem.
As a Machinist I can see why- Too much seal area to cover and have equal pressure with the retainers(bolts) provided. I agree with Scott F, in that it was prob. not installed right the first time.
Thanks for the input
Eric
