It really pisses me off to see surface rust on the receiver of my 2012, and I haven't even towed yet.
Should I just get used to it, treat it with XTEnd or similiar rust converter, or what?
And if I treat it, how do I keep it from rusting again (perhaps spray some oil on the surfaces after repainting)?
I realize that the ball mount is always going to try to remove the protective paint coating, but I'd like to fight off the resulting rust if possible.
Thanks for any suggestions.
I use a wire brush to hit any rust spots and use a paint that helps prevent rust on it. The inside of the square gets a light coating of waterproof axle bearing grease to help prevent the drop from rusting fast.
I wire brush then "OSPHO" (rust converter) let set 48 hrs, paint then coat with hot boiled linseed oil. I also spray the whole under carriage with the linseed oil every yr. I live on a outer banks island and have seen my old truck out last 2 of my buddies trucks in the rust-out race.
Are you talking about the receiver, or the ball?
For the painted, but corroded surface rust converter is good and spray can at HD were $1.99. For the ball invest in stainless steel one and that is it.
I keep fresh paint on all of the ballmount that doesnt make contact. And on the part of each part that makes contact I just spray it with my used oil mix. Any paint will just come right off in time.
