Dealing with Rust

Well, I had my tailgate all sandblasted and ready to be welded. The guy I took it to LEFT IT OUTSIDE IN THE RAIN!!!! Anyways, I now have it back (not welded) covered in surface rust. Should I try and remove the rust with wire brush/sandpaper, or should I use the Rust Converter, which I must say works quite well. (turns rust into black primer basically). Didn't know if one way would be better than the other. Looking for some feedback. Thanks very much.

sand it off..it'll take it down to bare metal, thats what you want, not rust converter

I agree with JoeBob. Rust converter is convienient but not the real fix you want. Take it down with a light wire brush. Then use a medium grain paper and sand down. Primer, sand with a little finer paper, then primer again. This will give it a good surface for painting. just before painting, lightly sand with a finer yet paper to a smooth surface, blow excess off with air and wipe down with NAPTHA. Then paint

Forgot to mention that this is the inner side of the tailgate and the inside as well. The outside part still has original paint that I will be scuffing up and painting later. Also, I started using the wire brush and it takes off the rust but the metal still seems stained where the rust was. So I'm thinking maybe wire brush, then sandpaper, then maybe a coat of rust converter, primer.... etc. Any thoughts???

I would make the guy sand blast it again for free. He is at fault for it rusting. Dont bust your a** off for someone elses mistake. If you can get it sandblasted again that would be your best solution.

coat the inside with rubber-undercoating, or Por 15, por-15.com

por-15 would be the best option..never rust again, tailgates rust due to bad seals at the top..and then they rust inside out, seal up the inside..problem solved
