Dealing with rust

I have a '93 E150 which, under the previous owners, avoided the worst of upstate NY winters by living in a barn or scooting off to Florida. The van had an original undercoat which has largely flaked away, and some surface rust has started to take hold. I have seen some people recommend spraying the underside (minus exhaust system, etc.) with oil every fall to help slow the rust down. Or should I consider something like steam cleaning and wire brushing the underside, followed by some rust eater and either paint or undercoat. Once again, I'm seeking to tap the accumulated wisdom of those of you who may have dealt with this before. What works best?

Dealing with rust

I did the wire brush and paint. This was mostly for cosmetic reasons but I'm sure it is a healthy rust barrier. Just don't skimp on prepping before you paint. Good luck.

Dealing with rust

I think the best way is to get the flaking undercoat off,
so there's nothing to trap the water, then wire brush the rusted areas real good. use the rust converter on the rusty spots. then paint the areas where you used the rust converter. then buy a rubberized undercoating and paint or spray it on. Ive seen people use blackjack roof patch, but it gets brittle after a couple of years. The rubberized stuff stays pliable. I work for a township in PA, an deal with rust constantly on my salt trucks. the rust converter really works.
Hope it helps,
eden

Dealing with rust

this is one area i know( living by the beach and and for other reasons)you need to get as much rust off as possible first. do this buy spraying wd40 on the rust then scrub with wire brush or what ever you have. the wd40 should get a lot of the rust off pretty easy. then sray wd40 on these spots reguraly. wd40 does a charm. try it and let's hear what you think.

Dealing with rust

We have a company here in the Twin cities area of Minnesota that makes a corrosion inhibitor product that works wonders. I used to to use it when i was in the crating/packaging industry and used it for rust prevention in domestic and international shipments with outstanding success.

You can find out more by e-mailing mboege@midwestcrating.com
he can give you alot more info about that companies products and is an authorized distributor and the will have something that will suit your needs.

Dealing with rust

WD-40 is for water displacement, it does get rid of the rust but it evaporates and doesn't prevent it. I suggest you go to http://www.hirschauto.com/ and pick up some stuff called Miracle Paint. This stuff is unbelieveable. All you have to do is get rid of the loose flaky rust. The surfact rust is better left there as it bonds to the rust much better then bare metal. I've used it on two of my trucks (pics of my truck in gallery). I bought 1 gallion and it was enough for two trucks. I just wire brushed everything, tight spaces with a brush, larger spots with a buffer tool that has a wire attachement. Good stuff, I swear by it.

Primary rig is Green Thunder:
95' F-150 XLT 4x4, 302, 5 spd, MSD 6A, Flowmaster Exhaust, Sunroof, Clear corners w/ Diamond headlights, CD player with 2 10" subs and some 32" BFG Muds .

Check out my Gallery for a look-see.
