Hey guys, Im new here but I have a question for you all. I have a weird rattle right before shifting (in certain gears) and when revving it between 4-6k. I had it checked out by a tranny guy and he said everything was fine. It was the same guy that rebuilt it after blowing through gears 2 and 3. So I checked the heatshield and its on there solid but I did notice something. Now I'm no mechanic or anything so Im not even sure if this is right or not but it looks like there a thin cover over the side of my tranny held on by two bolts, the metal has snapped clear off the bolt on one side and I believe that is causing the rattle. Here is the picture (this may or not be the tranny, like i said, im no mechanic and rarely do work on my engine or anything.)
That black bolt on the bottom is what holds it on, but the metal before the bolt is snapped off, Could that be my rattle? Thanks for your help!!
if that bug chunk on the left side of the picture is your muffle, then the tin plate is a heat deflector to keep radiant heat of the transfer case and transmission housing. YOu can tap on the sheetmetal plate and see if it rattles around. IT could be the problem... On another note, i would be a little carefull about shifting at 4-6000 RPM... why so high ? My truck as 225,000 miles and i doubt if it ever hit over 4000 RPM.

He's not shifting at that RPM. He's just "wind-milling" the engine which is even worse.

Yeah, I never shift that high or rarely rev it that high at all. I did it to test for the rattle. The rattle hits while driving at around 1500-2000 rpm's and usually uphill.
I had the transfer case heat shield crack around the bolt holes and rattle. I also had some gravel stuck in my exhaust heat shields. Both of those would make a rattle that came and went based on engine rpm.
