1300-1600 rpm's

1300-1600 rpm's
when driving in hilly areas of pa, i notice my truck seems to struggle when trying to keep the rpm's low, 1300-1600 range. but when i keep the rpm's in the 2000 range it isn't a problem at all, the trans doesn't even hunt in and out of gears. is there a prob with my truck while operating in low rpm's or is it due to the weight of the vehicle. i have a v10 with 3.73 rear. i usually try to feather the throttle to achieve max mpg's. air filter is clean (k&n) and always well maintained with 38,500 miles.

just seemed like it was stuck in overdrive and didn't have enough power to maintain speed up a long grade at such a low rpm range. no hesitation or anything like that. when i put my foot down a little bit and got it to drop into third it went up the hill fine. just seemed with such a large engine it should be able to handle large grades with ease at low rpm ranges in overdrive.

sounds normal to me? its like a manual tranny car, if you try to go up a hill in 4th or 5th gear its going to strugle. downshift and its fine. the 3:73 gears dont help with this problem. i have the same motor/tranny combo you do and i live in a hilly area so i usealy lock out O/D to keep it from hunting because i hate it plus it builds up heat in the tranny.
my v6 explorer is much worse with this problem, somtimes its gotta drop down into second running about 4k rpms to hold 55mph on some large hills around me. it got alot better once i swaped in 4:10 gears though.
