2005 explorer clicking coming from back end

Hey everyone,

Looking to see if anyone else has experienced this issue i'm having with my explorer. It is kind of random but frequently happening. when the car is driving usually at slower speeds, starting or stopping, you can hear a clicking coming from the back of the car. I have had a few people look at it but not able to identify it. It was funny because when I was getting gas one day, I heard the same noise and sure enough it was another explorer driving through the parking lot of the gas station.

Any ideas???

Thanks Ron

Is the clicking only present when the vehicle is moving? I'd suggest you pull the rear rotors and see if the parking brake shoe friction material has separated from the shoes. This seems to be a pretty common occurrence, and you might be hearing yours in the early stages. I suppose you could also try to slowly engage your parking brake while the truck is rolling (find a place with no traffic) to see if the noise changes. If so, it's quite likely to be associated with the parking brake system.

I had an issue that sounds like yours. Turned out to be the parking brake shoes. One had came unglued and would make a clicking noise at low speed especially in a turn. I was convinced it was differential related until I found the problem during a brake job. Parking brake always worked fine, so I never thought it could have been the issue.

clicking

Thanks for the responses guys. It is funny because as soon as I read the 2 reply, it dawned on me. The truck was at Ford for something and the tech made a note about the shoes coming off the backing plates. So I have purchased the shoes just waiting for a break in the schedule to throw them on. Thanks for the help!!
