new to diesels, but not to fords. owned 3 gassers before this all with 460's. whenever hauling, a steep grade normal procedure is to put it in 1st or second and go. with the 460's usually I never usually pulled around over about 3000 RPM's.
now with my new 6.0 and 5 spd auto, just wondering what's the max RPMs these motors should turn at? I'm ASSuming near the 3000 mark but, just wondering.
3000?! Are you kidding?
I will refer you to my standard gallery picture for this subject...
It'll stay there all day. The days of diesels redlining at 2700 RPMs are over, thankfully, even though there are alot of other members who don't like to accept that

i hope you are not manually shifting your torqueshift like that. there is no need to start out in first. the torqueshift is a awesome automatic tranny and requires little if any operator input other than pressing the tow button.

Mine sees 4000 on a regular basis.
Did you say the 460's never saw much over 3000rpm?

well, I've been reading for about a week in this forum, and haven't found that info.
the 460's that I have owned haven't seen time over 3000k rpm very often or for very long when I have gotten them that wound up. call me paranoid.
I shifted the old E30D tranny that way, cause, basicly, it sucked and I was doing my best to take care of it. I haven't shifted my new torqueshift like that other than to see where the power stops in each gear. I know that new ones are MUCH better than the old 3 spd with OD.
that's great to know that I can turn them at 4k and not be worried.
My dad's F350 dually with the Tow Boss package (4:30 gears) rarely hits 3500 when dragging the 14K lb 5th wheel around. Cruising is about 2100 if I remember correctly. The 6.0 makes most of its torque below 2200 in stock form.We rarely exceed 70 mph because he doesn't like crosswind effects.
Mine (3:73 gears) stays about 2300 or so when empty with cruise set slighty above the posted speed.
I've always tried to be ultra easy with my trucks.
You can't reasonably overrev the 6.0 in stock form. They are rev-limited to 4000 by the PCM (far below the safe limit), and it would be nearly impossible to do it mechanically with an automatic transmission. The only way it is even possible is with a 6 speed by downshifting in an obnoxious fashion.
A little off topic, but just thought I'd share an image of my Honda road course car. It's not the original motor in the car but it has untouched internals, sees 9k all day long on a track day
