Are there any good tutorials for removing the cab and bed? I'd like to see what I'm getting into before I attempt a project like this! Any idea what a cab and bed weigh?
There are a couple Of threads that have some information on removing both the cab and bed... Do a search and you'll probably find them. I had one or two bookmarked, but can't find em. I can't speak for the cab- yet- but the bed was super easy, other than the rusty bolts. I messed with them for a while before deciding to just cut them off from the top. There are 6 bolts in the bed, and then two more under the bed, holding it to the frame at the rear near the bumper. Luckily for me, those two came out with relative ease after a good soaking with PB blaster. Once they were off, I just rigged some straps and lifted it off with my a frame and a chain fall. I've seen others do it with an engine hoist, and some use just brute force, though id plan on having 4 strong guys as a minimum if you try it that way!
The cab is pretty heavy, too. We've manhandled it around with just two guys, but that was before any repairs were done. Now that it's all purdy, I'd hate to do it that way! I've got it on a wheeled base that allows me to move it as I need to, and to lift it I use the hoist. Makes it possible to do pretty much anything I need to with it, even when I'm working alone.
I tried DuckDuckGo-ing (hate Google logging everything about me), but maybe I'm using the wrong search terms, though. I checked YouTube without much luck (so now Google knows I just bought a crusty old Ford truck and I'll start seeing welder ads, et cetera). Guess I'll just bite the bullet and use Google to search this site!
Couple of decent links there, but it boils down to 2 things, get some friends to help, or buy a cherry picker.
You can easily pick up the box with a couple of 2X4s hooked under the frame rails, a strap, and a cherry picker. Cab is easy too. Just wrap the straps under the cab. Hook them to a cherry picker stuck through the door and lift away.
My preferred method is just to pick it up by hand with 2 guys. Neither thing is that heavy, 400 lbs or so.
