Removing drip rails

This topic came up in another thread, so I said I would post a few pictures about removing the drip rails on my big window cab. I've taken some welding classes and done some practicing, but I felt that doing this myself would be a lengthy project so I elected to pay a fabricator I know to get it done. He's blazing along a LOT faster than I could have done it.

I bought the cab from SuperDuty93 (before I knew he was an FTE member!) and got it for a good price, but the amount of rust damage in the drip rail area exceeded my expectations. Someone in the past had used fiberglass to repair it but the rust was progressing beyond the repair.

First pic shows the driver side rail once it was sort of cleaned up:

Richard the Fabricator cut out the affected area, fortunately he managed to save the lower "lip" in most cases:

Here he's working across the front of the cab, he's fitting a piece of metal into the area he's cutting out, using 16Ga steel:

Here's two pics of the passenger side, front:

and towards the rear:

And here's the passenger side with the cancer cut out and the new piece fitted in:

Here is the finished product, a little body filler and some primer:

And that's how I'm spending my children's inheritance.

Thanks for posting, I know there are a lot of trucks out there with that drip rail rot.

Doing some final work before the body goes to paint. Should be painted in the next few weeks!
