The E4OD I had behind my modified PSD did just fine pulling loads heavier than that, on and off highway. And there's no such thing as flat ground where I'm at.
I'm not positive, but I remember the auto trucks being rated for higher towing capacities than the 5 speeds.
You can build/ or buy a well built E4OD relatively cheaply.
it physically won't shift into drive or it will shift into drive with the shifter but the truck won't move forward?
Forward clutch is dead.
Rebuild it. Find a good shop. Put some $$$$ into it if you want it to last. The E4OD is one of those deals. You get what you pay for. Most people will put a couple of bucks into the tranny, then call it junk when it fails.

still.you know, with proof of miles and if he was willing to provide money back after a trans shop inspection, and if its for a diesel, you could pay a shop to swap the guts into your 4wd case and save some $during this transfer, they could inspect things/replace as needed to save some $.that could turn into a nightmare if your not careful though.you know how things like this go sometimes when trying to save. sometimes it comes back to bite ya.
