Ford Trucks for Ford Truck Enthusiasts

The guy asked advice on an E40D, bringing in the 'switch to manual' crap doesn't help him. Save it for a thread where someone asks how to switch one over.
Besides, I bet that my dually with the automatic in it has hauled more thousands of tons of everything and everything than almost any other truck on this site. That's all I use it for is hauling, and it's pushing 300,000 miles. I've crossed the scales with the truck carrying 10,000 pounds. CARRYING...... and have the weigh scale receipt somewhere to prove it. With a trailer behind, I've grossed 25,000 pounds hauling limestone retaining wall rocks.
Today I fired it up for an hour, it delivered a bushcord of firewood, then brought home 4 more 4x5' round bales on the return trip. It was empty for about 8 miles in between.
Anyway, as to whether you should toss a used one in, or rebuild yours is a toss up. How much do you use the truck, what sort of shape is it in, and are you planning to keep it long term. $2500 to rebuild one if you plan to sell it in 6 months isn't good planning, but if you are going to keep it long term, then if that cost is spread out over ten years, it's cheap maintenance on the truck.

And a E4OD can pull 25K any day....on flat land. I don't care what you say, you will not pull that load up 20-30% grades.
Pics of towing???? Its been more loaded up than shown here. but here ya go. Logs amounted to 8742 lbs on woodweb.

Some days I've hauled 20-30 loads of gravel like this one, that's a smaller load, likely about 3 ton.

This load of stone was about 11 ton gross, or 6 ton net. (More than that Kubota will weigh!!) I don't know the grades of the hills on that route, but the first seven miles coming out of that quarry are on a fire access road that has burnt out clutches in tractor trailers in the past. For the job I was doing when I took that pic, I was hauling that stone about 55 miles one way. Total of 12 trips for that job alone.

And then the regular duty it sees carrying a bit of hay. (Average of one load a week, all year round, but often in summer it hauls a lot more than that. No pics, but I often put another few bales on a trailer behind at the same time.)

I've said it before, and guess I need to say it again. It's a preference. If you want a standard, by all means, get one, or have one. If you want an auto, buy one. If you want both, buy more than one IDI.
Anyway, we can go on strutting our stuff all day, or we can try to help out the original poster, which is EXACTLY my point, posting to switch to a ZF5 is fine and dandy IF the poster is asking for that. When they are asking advice on what to do with their automatic though, lets try to answer their question and skip the rest of it.
The poster is asking HOW to replace/rebuild his E4OD. Swapping it out for a manual is a cheaper option. I am just giving the asker Options.
