More E40D ?'s

Ok been a while since I've been on here and I think I've seen someone else post on this...
With that I have a '91 f-250 7.3 with the e40d. I have clean all conections (I think) replaced tps, and changed fluid and filter. The ? I have is when it shifts thro the gears; first to second snatches hard then another shift, or what feels like one, the 2-3 & 3-od sifts are normal.
Now I doesn't do it all the time. The times it doesn't the transition from 1-2 is much smoother.
It also is slow to engage reverse, don't know of those are linked.

Thanks for any input

I thought more about it and it does it more when the oil is cold, but not exclusively.
I'm determined to find another e40d that I can tear down and learn about what's inside haha can't know till you see it yourself

If its temperature related, I'm tempted to think its in the valve body. The D2 shift valve is one possible culprite but I *think* the coast clutch control valve might also be capable of causing this.

Was there any improvement after changing the fluid?

Not really, at least none I notced.
If you really set on the throttle it seems to do it more constantly, but if you feather it it happens less.

I had same problem when it was raining and cold. My PSOM was not working. I kept getting a code for speedo not working but it was. Unplug it and plug back see if that helps. It is in the dash cluster.

Thanks! I did replace the speedo gear and sensor, and tried to clean all conections but clearly i missed a couple. What does it look like?... And what is a PSOM? Haha sorry I'm still a lil ignorant here

It is in the dash cluster. There is a big plug behind the speedo. You have to to take the cluster out. While you have it out check all of the cluster lights.

Ok, right on. Thanks again. We drove it today and it's still doing it (hot or cold).
Does the transmission disengage before shifting? Is that why it snatches so hard from 1-2? Because its jamming the gears? I know that's not all exactly how it works, but in a round-about way, is that whats happening?

Im looking at putting a trans temp sensor in mine for the same sort of reason. It really snatches from 1-2 almost always, and most of the other gears seem to slip in beyond smooth, I cant say too much as i have not taken the time to replace/test the TPS but I feel and understand your concern as well. Im interested in seeing what Ford250 has to say about this.

neither of you are getting any codes?
if you test the tps with a volt meter, slowly rotate the throttle and see if your meter reads any sudden dead spots/spikes.
when you start out in D and take off, your in first gear already of course and the first gear shift you feel is the trans going into 2nd.this is around 5-10ish mph or so.is the gear you feel?
in the first post,it sounds like the 2nd to 3rd gear shift is the harsh one, because you say right after that, you feel "another shift" or "what feels like one" - well that is the converter locking up after the trans enters 3rd gear right around 35ish mph.

Well, I've replaced and adjusted the tps and it is in the spec margins.
The hard shift is 1-2. It isn't always hard, its different one red light to the next.
