I have seen a few threads about E4OD's and there valve issues just want to narrow down to a valve issue or if it needs a rebuild. I can shift threw all gears i just have lag going into 3rd. also when putting it in reverse it takes about 5 seconds to finally drop into reverse. this is also accompanied with P0782 2-3 shift malfunction.
drop your pan and pull the main body.next pull out the 2-3 shift valve.you'll know if she's sticking in the bore;
heres the location;
................right here^ never mind modifying it like these shift kit instructions.just inspect it.
the part to fix it: TransGo E4OD/4R100: E4-VL-23
though you could probably get away with cleaning up the valve yourself and putting it back in.also insuring the bore is smooth either way.i would first insure it's for my valve body and use it if so,if i had this issue.that spring may be frigged up too id imagine if that valve sticks and looks like transgo wisely provides that as well with the steel valve.
is the delayed reverse symptom new or just something your also mentioning? cus this is fairly typical with the e40d in general.once it engages into reverse,reverse functions just fine,nice and strong power with no slipping or banging right?
Correct the reverse has no slipping or banging and it isnt a new symptom. Also when it shifts into 3rd it isnt slipping its just a hard shift. The only new symptom was the transmission code but im sure i narrowed that into transmisson over fill getting into the plug on the passenger side of the transmission.

Is the 2nd to 3rd shift any different in timing as compared to manually done or allowing an automatic shift. MARK above is exactly correct that the 2-3 shift is related to Direct Clutch functionality.
But, as others have mentioned, running codes is first step and once sensors are fixed as needed or ruled out altogether then it boils done to a hydraulic issue. Direct clutch piston hanging in direct clutch is a common cause for lazy 2-3.
5 second reverse engagement is a lot and a slow 2-3 could possibly point to a lower than nominal line pressure. Only using a 200 psig pressure gauge and recording shift pressures will help to pinpoint an exact hydraulic cause.
If it is hydraulic related you could drop the pan and re-torque valve bodies and then refill & retest. The 2-3 shift valve is in the accumulator valve body could be pulled and cleaned but if you do this, don't let the separator plate sag in the front or the case check ***** will fall out of the webbing and make it a nightmare.
