Brake Light Issue

After I got home from Church last night, I went out to start the truck and let it run a few minutes (as I normally do if I don't drive it for a day). Since it was dark, I turned the parking lights on, and did a visual inspection to make sure all my lights were working properly, then I checked my blinkers and noticed the driver side was really slow, and when I turned the passenger side on the driver side went out, parking light and all. I pulled the unit out and checked the ground, it appeared to be clean, any other thoughts? Truck info is in my signature...

Any time i have an issue like this its either a ground issue of the light socket itself. You have to be careful when buying new sockets, a lot of the brand new Chinese ones are junk right off the self. What i did is went to the junk yard and pulled some off a 90's truck, very good quality socket and bulb but they dont quite fit in our tail light housing. I just used a little duct tape so they dont fall out. Some people dont like to jerry rig but you wont be dissapointed in the light! It also makes the brake lights a lot brighter

Agreed, sounds like a ground issue internal to the socket itself.

By the way - there's absolutely zero electrical work you can do without a multimeter. You can't "look" at a ground to determine that it's "clean." Your eyes cannot read resistance. You don't stare at things to figure out what they smell like, right?

Could you elaborate? Is the mounting too thin or the holder not three pronged?

.

The socket and bulb it self is about a a 1/4 inch to long (or the plastic piece of the taillight is to short). The socket will stick out about a 1/4 inch and wont let you twist it in so you have to tape the back so it wont fall out.

What's the reasoning behind using a later-model socket? Just cheaper than buying a year-correct replacement socket? You can get quality replacement sockets; I think they are under 10 bucks a piece. You can get them through Rock Auto, but most parts stores should have the high quality kind. Napa will, for sure.

I know the cheap ones you're talking about, and yes they are junk.
