I have a 2001 Escape XLS. Today it was pointed out that the driver side brake light was not working. The passenger side and top light all work. All other lights work: backup, rear light, turn signals.
Thinking it was merely the bulb, I replaced it and it still did not come on. I checked the old bulb and the filament was intact. Same with the new bulb.
Anything else I can check? somebody point me in a direction please.
The owner's manual states one fuse controls both brake lights and the top light, so it's not a fuse...
Doesn't seem to be rusty, although the outside of the socket has the appearance of having been overheated. The inside of the socket looked normal. Only the stop light does not come on.
You'll want to check the wires with a meter or test light, make sure your are getting power up to the socket. If so, replace it. A loose connection can generate enough heat to swell scorch the socket.
The brake light is supposed to work when the pedal is pushed, even though the other brake light is being used for turn signal purposes at the same time. Either the turn signal switch in the steering column or the wiring from the switch to the socket have a problem. The turn signal switch is supposed to route brake pedal provided power to the remaining brake light when the turn signal is engaged. If you don't get power to one side, it is likely wiring or the switch.

I took the Escape to the shop, where I had scheduled some maintenance work, a tranny flush, and had them check it out. They told me the lights all worked fine, and they jiggled wires and tapped on the socket in an attempt to duplicate the brake light failure. I drove home and checked it out: all lights worked.
Damn! Now I have an intermittent problem, which I hate.
