Hey guys I got a mark vii electric fan and have been told i need to upgrade to the 3g. After doing some research I see that it is probbly a good idea due to the old alternator being a fire hazzard. My question is I see some 92 trucks came with 3g how would i know if i have one? Also I wanted to know what is the best size alternator for me to use? The 130 is pricey but I also hear its the best one to use. Any info that can be passed my way would be greatly appreciated
My 93 had a 2g, did the conversion last year. Got a 130 amp alt from the junkyard and a harness kit from rjm. Pretty easy swap and my truck is happier when running the winch.
I did a 3G upgrade to my 88 f150. Wiring it up was a snap. I had to do a little fabricating to mount the new alt in the stock alt bracket, but wasn't too bad. I got a high output alt (160 amp!) from RJM Injection. RJM Injection Tech — Alternators
With alt and pulley it came to around $150, which is pretty fair considering it is not a rebuilt and you can choose dif pulleys and clocking.
Anything over stock (65 amp) would do the trick. Just remember the alternator is only as good as the battery its charging. I prefer optima red top, but I am running a plow which constantly drains the battery. I wouldn't expect the electric fan to draw anymore than 100 amps! So as long as you have a sufficient alt with bigger guage charge wire and a good working battery, you should be good...
